Tit Icebreaker

On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of St. Titus the Wonderworker, who lived in the 9th century.

Saint Titus received the nickname “Icebreaker” among the people because on his day rivers and lakes are finally opened. It was customary to carefully observe this process: if the ice sinks and sinks to the bottom, then you need to prepare for a difficult year. If the hollow water spills, you can expect good grass and early mowing. And if the ice has not yet melted to Titus, it means that fishing this spring will be poor. We watched Titus and the birds. If a quail calls, there will be a lot of bread and a lot of grass.

This day was also called Breadless Day. Grain supplies were running out, and people began to subsist on bread for kvass. On this occasion they said: “Once upon a time there was a shovelful of life for everyone, but now they have survived – their legs have shrunk”; “Whoever has nothing, but we have even worse.” Despite the difficult times, the grain stored for sowing was not touched. It was a taboo: “Sell the cow, and sow the field with good seed”; “Starve yourself, but don’t deprive the field of grain.”

Traders, on the contrary, called this date “profit day.” They tried to celebrate it as noisily as possible – this promised good profits throughout the year.

Often the day of Titus falls during the period of Lent. This explains many jokes, sayings and sayings about Titus. “Our Titus even commits fornication during Lent”; “Drunken Titus repeats psalms”; “Our Titus has both pitot and bito,” to name just a few.
