The uncle of a Krasnoyarsk teenager who died in the Sea of Okhotsk was sentenced

The Oktyabrsky District Court of Ulan-Ude sentenced Mikhail Pichugin to three years of forced labor. The man was found guilty of violation of traffic safety rules and operation of water transport, resulting in negligence death of two people in the Sea of Okhotsk.
Let us remind you that August 9, 2024 Pichugin, together with his brother Sergei and his 15-year-old son Ilya, who lives in Krasnoyarsk, set off on the boat “Baykat 470” from Cape Perovsky in the Khabarovsk Territory towards Sakhalin. The men planned to go fishing and show the teenager the whales.
On the way back, the boat’s engine stalled—the cooling system had failed. The ship drifted uncontrollably at sea for almost two months. 15-year-old Ilya was the first to die from cold and dehydration, then his father Sergei. Pichugin himself survived by eating peas and rainwater, and lost about 50 kilograms. He draped the boat in reflective vests to attract attention. After 67 days, fishermen found the ship off the coast of Kamchatka.
Investigators accused the man of driving a boat with a faulty engine, in which he entered a navigation area prohibited for such a vessel, moving almost 11 nautical miles from the coast.
Mikhail Pichugin was sentenced to 3 years of forced labor.
