Arsenal management are in advanced talks with Mikel Arteta (44) to sign a new long-term contract, with negotiations progressing positively. The current deal runs until the end of next season.

The Spanish coach, who took over the reins of the team in 2019, seems to have earned the full confidence of the club. Under his guidance, the Gunners are enjoying an impressive season as they are favorites to win the Premier League title and in the race for their first ever Champions League trophy.

Arsenal are 9 points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table, but the “citizens” have a less contested match and have a direct match at the “Etihad Stadium”. In the Champions League, Arsenal prevailed 1-0 in the “quarters” leg against Sporting Lisbon.

Arsenal want to extend Mikel Arteta's contract

According to the BBC, the two sides are close to an agreement, with the main topics of discussion centering on Arteta's financial remuneration and transfer budget.

In addition to the coach's contract, the agenda also includes the future of talented young players such as Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri. At the same time, the extension of the collaboration with the team captain, Martin Odegaard, is also being analyzed.

Before being appointed head coach at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta was Pep Guardiola's “second-in-command” on the Manchester City bench from 2016-2019.

As a player, Arteta thrived as a central midfielder and was brought up in Barcelona's academy. In 2001, the Iberian went on loan to PSG, and then he was transferred to Rangers for the sum of 7.9 million euros.

After only two years, Arteta returned to Spain, to Real Sociedad, and in 2005 he transferred to Everton, initially as a loan, after which he was acquired permanently in exchange for the sum of 2.8 million euros.

After 7 seasons in the “candy” shirt, Arteta was bought by Arsenal for the sum of 12 million euros and ticked off 5 seasons for the “gunners”, before retiring in 2016. During his time at the “Emirates”, Arteta won two FA Cups and two FA Super Cups.
