Giant compensation in Portugal. Up to 45 thousand euro for victims of the Church

The Catholic Church in Portugal will pay a total of over EUR 1.6 million to victims of sexual abuse committed in this country by people within its structures, both clergy and lay people.

As reported by the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, compensation awarded to victims of sexual abuse will range from PLN 9,000. up to 45 thousand euro.
The authorities of the Catholic Church in Portugal said they were aware that no compensation would compensate the victims for moral losses “causing deep wounds and scarring them for life.”
They specified that of the testimonies from 95 alleged victims of abuse that were submitted to church authorities, 78 cases were considered credible.
