“A New White House Tenant's Fiction.” Traian Băsescu contradicts Trump regarding the imminent danger represented by Iran

Former president Traian Băsescu declared that before the outbreak of the conflict, all efforts should have been made to open negotiations with Iran, with a view to an armistice.

“I was trying at any cost to open negotiations with Iran, for an armistice. At any cost!”, stated Băsescu in an intervention at Digi24, emphasizing that the situation is unclear and the existing information is contradictory.
The former head of state also questioned claims that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States, contradicting US President Donald Trump's statements.
“Iran, I think according to what has happened so far, has understood that it cannot have a nuclear weapon. The information is contradictory. Some say that Iran, since the bombings last summer, has not continued the nuclear program, and Mr. Trump tells us that they were about to attack the United States. What I do not believe, is a new fabrication of the tenant of the White House. I do not believe, Iran could not hit the United States.” he said.
Băsescu suggested the need for a pause in the conflict to reassess the situation, including the possibility that the former Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei had left a document that would have prohibited the development of nuclear weapons.
“So things are controversial. I would try a stop game, and let's see how we do. That it could be, if the information is true that the former supreme leader, the murdered Khamenei, left a document saying not to build the nuclear weapon. We might be surprised to find that Iran's military nuclear program was no longer evolving.” the former president added.
In the same context, he mentioned the statements of the former director of the US National Counterterrorism Center, Joseph Kent, who recently claimed that there was no immediate danger of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.
A few days ago, Băsescu conveyed, through a public post, that Romania must take preventive measures to protect the population and the American military equipment located on the territory of the country. He noted that the opinion expressed is a personal one and does not contradict official statements.
The former president warned that, although Romania has old and good relations with Iran, there is a possibility of attacks on American equipment: “It is possible that Iran will try to hit the American equipment deployed in the bases at Kogălniceanu and Turda. In such a situation, Romania has the necessary military equipment to remove the danger, but no one can guarantee the elimination of all risks.”
