Nicușor Dan says that Romania did not negotiate with the US for permission to use the military bases: “It was a need of our ally”

President Nicușor Dan said on Thursday that Romania did not negotiate with the United States the permission granted for the use of military bases on the country's territory. The head of state explained that the request came from the American ally, and Bucharest responded quickly to this need.

Asked if Romania received anything in return, apart from the strengthening of security, Nicușor Dan stated that the discussions with the USA were carried out on several components, but did not have the character of a direct negotiation.

“One or two of them reinforce the Deveselu shield, which represents additional protection for Romania and the part of Europe it defends. We have an ongoing discussion with the US, but it was not a negotiation. It was a need that our ally had, which we hurried to satisfym the moment he had it,” the president stated.

“Everything is a negotiation, but we don't discuss details publicly”

Nicușor Dan emphasized that, in general, international relations presuppose continuous negotiations, whether it is NATO, Ukraine or the United States, but did not provide details about the ongoing discussions.

“We have already received something. The Deveselu shield has an additional component that helps it. But I will not explain ongoing negotiations, ongoing discussions, in the public space“, the president added.

Asked if he can guarantee that Romania will come out of these discussions well, Nicușor Dan answered:

“It's already turned out really well.”

We remind you that on Thursday, President Nicușor Dan had a meeting with the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Mark Rutte, at the NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Asked if the good relationship with the USA still works, given that Donald Trump is disappointed by some of the allies because they did not support him in securing traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, the head of NATO answered:

“Together with allies across NATO, we agree that it is critical that Iran not have nuclear or ballistic missile capabilities. The United States is acting virtually to reduce Iran's capabilities. It is vital to Israel; a nuclear-capable Iran would pose an extremely serious threat to Israel, the entire Middle East, and Europe.”
