The project assumes that the number of permanent residents in Switzerland could not exceed 10 million people before 2050. One of the elements of the initiative is also the abandonment of the current agreement on the free movement of persons with the EU, which is one of the pillars of cooperation between Switzerland and the community.
Right-wing support for limiting immigration
The idea is supported by the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP), which has been opposing deepening integration with the European Union for years. According to the group, too close cooperation with the EU may limit the country's sovereignty and impose excessive regulations.
Supporters of the initiative claim that immigration to Switzerland is too highwhich leads, among others, to housing shortages, rising rents and greater pressure on public infrastructure.
Government: the initiative will harm the state
Federal authorities strongly oppose the proposed changes. According to the government, limiting the number of inhabitants could threaten the country's economic prosperity, security and humanitarian traditions.
Justice Minister Beat Jans emphasized during a meeting with representatives of cantons, trade unions and employers' organizations that Adopting the initiative could weaken the labor market and make it more difficult for companies to operate.
