By rejecting the SAFE program, Polish President Karol Nawrocki shows that his enemy is Germany and the European Union – writes the German daily “Sueddeutsche Zeitung” in a commentary.

Viktoria Grossmann, the Warsaw correspondent of “SZ”, states that in the case of SAFE, Nawrocki “behaves as if foreign forces wanted to decide about his country.” He estimates that this way he “exposes himself to ridicule.”
With his veto, Nawrocki “proved that he is only an obedient follower of Jarosław Kaczyński's orders,” which SAFE describes as a “German ambush,” the author states.
Grossmann writes that currently “PiS's main opponent is not Russia, but the European Union and Germany.” “This is nothing new, but now – when PiS has been in the opposition for over two years, and the far-right groups on its right are gaining support – this party is becoming even more radical,” he adds.
The “SZ” correspondent further notes that during its rule, PiS “willingly accepted money from Brussels, despite constant rhetorical attacks on the EU.” Now, however, “it would be to his advantage if Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government coalition suffered from a lack of money.”
In Grossman's assessment, Kaczyński presents SAFE as “a kind of weapon that gives Germany the opportunity to attack Poland on the capital markets and enslave it again.” In her opinion, Nawrocki showed that “he is indifferent to Poland, its citizens and their safety.”
Finally, the author of the commentary notes that support for PiS is falling in opinion polls. And he expresses his belief that the European Commission will “find ways” for Tusk's government to obtain funds. (PAP)
