Codrin-Horațiu Miron, chief prosecutor at DIICOT Timișoara and candidate for the position of chief prosecutor of DIICOT, said on Wednesday that he will launch a “total offensive” in combating drug use and trafficking, if he ends up leading the institution. He stated that the Port of Constanța is the “main gateway” for drugs in Romania.

“In the area of drugs, the offensive will be a total one. The necessary levers are in place. We have the CSAT decision of October 2023 by which drug use was labeled as a matter of safety, individual national security, and certain institutional working groups were even established, both in the prevention component and in the combat area, with the mission to emphasize, in particular, street drug trafficking, trafficking in public institutions, and I am referring here to schools, universities, and drug trafficking among minors”, stated Codrin-Horațiu Miron during the interview held before the Commission established at the Ministry of Justice, quoted by Agerpres.

“Romania is a country of drug transit”

He added that the Port of Constanța is the “main gateway” for drugs in Romania.

“We all know that Romania is a country of drug transit. We are talking about the cross-border route of heroin, which goes from Afghanistan, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Western European countries. The traditional route of cocaine – South America, mainly Colombia, Romania, Western European countries. The traditional route of synthetic drugs, I mean here MDMA and amphetamines, as well as new psychoactive substances, with the country of origin Holland, and the traditional route of hashish, cannabis resin, with countries of origin Morocco and Spain. In this context, the Port of Constanța is an important gateway for drugs in Romania. It is commendable that the anti-drug office in the Constanța territorial service was established, but I think we have not done enough at the moment,” said Miron.

He also emphasized that it would be necessary to establish an anti-drug office within the Timișoara territorial service, in order to establish a barrier in the western part of Romania as well.

“(…) It is necessary to close this national corridor by establishing a barrier also in the western part of Romania, which would prevent the exit of drugs from the national territory or, as the case may be, their entry into the national territory, and I think it would be opportune to establish an anti-drug office also within the Timișoara territorial service, considering the massive flow of drugs entering and leaving the country through the western part of Romania”, Horațiu Miron said.

Five prosecutors have applied for the position of chief prosecutor of DIICOT: Ioana-Bogdana Albani, chief prosecutor of service within DIICOT – central structure, Alina Albu, current chief prosecutor of DIICOT, Antonia Diaconu, chief prosecutor of service at DIICOT Pitesti, Codrin-Horațiu Miron, chief prosecutor of service at DIICOT Timișoara, and Bogdan-Ciprian Pîrlog, military prosecutor of The Military Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Military Court, which later withdrew from the race.
