Don’t be lazy to prepare a bed for carrots now – the root vegetables will grow smooth and sweet

February is not the time to sit idle. Although planting is still months away, the foundation for the future carrot harvest is being laid right now. How loose and stone-free the soil is will determine whether the root crops will be smooth, sweet, and without “horns.”

Carrots do not like dense soil, fresh manure and acid. But she really likes light, sandy, neutral soil with good aeration. And you can prepare one today, even if there is snow outside the window.

How to prepare a garden bed in February:

  • Choose a sunny location without nearby groundwater. It is best where onions, garlic, cabbage or legumes grew last year.
  • Consider the soil structure: if the soil is clayey, add river sand and rotted compost. Add 1 bucket of each per 1 m².
  • Check the acidity: carrots like a pH of 6.0–7.0. If the soil is acidic, add wood ash, you will need 1 cup per 1 m². It will deoxidize and provide potassium.
  • Do not use fresh manure or nitrogen fertilizers, they cause root branching and bitterness.
  • Dig the bed using the back of a shovel, breaking up the clods. If the ground is frozen, simply mark the boundaries and prepare the mixture for spring.

These steps can be taken now as you plan for the season. In the spring, all you have to do is loosen the soil and sow.

Already this fall, you will harvest sweet, bright carrots that are easy to store all winter, and all because in February you found 20 minutes in the garden.
