Poles in exile. New Central Statistical Office data on departures from the country [TABELA]
There has been a heated discussion about immigrants in our country for some time now. There are many opponents, there are slogans about “Poland for Poles”, etc. On the other hand, many fellow citizens have the same status in other countries. A large group of compatriots live for long periods in various countries. What does it look like in numbers?

They emigrated from Poland. How many are there?
“It is estimated that at the end of 2024, approximately 1,499,000 people were temporarily staying outside Poland. Polish citizens, i.e. by 22 thousand more than in 2023” – according to Friday's publication of the Central Statistical Office (GUS).
A special report presents the estimated number of Polish residents staying temporarily abroad for a period of at least 12 months. The analysis covers the period from 2019 to 2024.

As Central Statistical Office officials emphasize, “these results are not migration streams, i.e. the number of departures in individual years, and they cannot be added up. The presented results for the years 2019–2023 constitute an update of the published estimates in 2024. For 2024, the presented results are forecast values.” He adds that these numbers primarily show the trend and directions of Poles' departures and should not be treated as exact data, but only as approximate values.
Poles in exile. Which countries have the most?
Statistics show that European countries are the most common (approximately 94%) choice of country of residence for long-term temporary emigrants from Poland. Most of them – approximately 869 thousand. — stayed in the Member States of the European Union.
Among European countries most Polish emigrants lived in Great Britain (415 thousand), Germany (407 thousand), the Netherlands (132 thousand) and Norway (78 thousand). The four grouped together over a million Poles.

It is worth noting that in 2019, the number of Polish citizens staying temporarily (12 months and longer) abroad was slightly over 1.6 million. There was a decline in 2020, and in 2020-2024 it fluctuated around the level of approximately 1.5 million.

The largest increase in the number of emigrants in 2019-2024 occurred in the Netherlands and Switzerland — by PLN 28 thousand, respectively. (26.6%) and 8 thousand (39.1%). On the other hand the biggest declines were recorded in the UK, Germany and Italy — by 132 thousand respectively. (24.1%), 10 thousand (2.4%) and 8 thousand (14.2%). In other European countries, smaller changes not exceeding PLN 5,000 were recorded. people throughout the analyzed period.
