An explosion at a fireworks store in eastern China killed eight people and injured two others on Sunday, February 15, according to chinadailyhk.

The incident took place in Jiangsu province at around 14:30 (6:30 GMT), and according to an official statement published on social media, the explosion was allegedly triggered by the “misuse” of fireworks by one or more people who were in the store at the time.

The deflagration was followed by a strong fire, and the intervention teams worked for about an hour and a half to extinguish the fire. The final tally indicates eight people dead and two people slightly injured.

The authorities have opened an investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the explosion. Also, the persons considered responsible have already been detained, and the eventual legal responsibilities will be determined.

The tragedy comes at a time when the use of fireworks is increasing significantly. Outside the big cities, where the use of pyrotechnic materials is strictly regulated, the population frequently uses fireworks at important events and traditional celebrations, including the Lunar New Year, which is to be celebrated on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations has announced that the country is entering the busiest time of the year for fireworks displays and uses.

In this context, the institution sent an alert to all factories producing fireworks at the national level, asking for “comprehensive inspections” to check the safety conditions on site.
