A volunteer firefighter was left without a license and was fined over 3,000 lei after being stopped by a police crew, even while he was on duty. The policemen, who were heading towards the same fire, penalized him on the grounds that the fire truck did not give him priority, Monitorul de Galati reports.

The case took place on February 3, in Drăguşeni commune, Galati county. Both cars, the SVSU Drăguşeni special vehicle and the police, were going to the same place, to a fire that had broken out at a house in the village of Căuești.

Halfway, the fire truck was caught up by a local police crew. The road was narrow, and the firefighter behind the wheel could not make way for the police, according to local media.

At that time, the police fined the driver for not giving priority to the crew and using the beacon and siren that were not authorized.

IPJ Galati's reaction

After the media coverage of the case, IPJ Galati sent a statement, in which it presents the reasons why it sanctioned the firefighter.

“On February 3, 2025, around 3:30 p.m., a crew from Section 5 of the Rădeşti Rural Police, traveling to an event in the village of Căueşti, detected in traffic, on DJ251J, a car driven by a 56-year-old man from the Drăguşeni locality, traveling from the Fundeanu locality to Căueşti,” IPJ Galați reported.

The police say that the driver “would not have respected the light signals of the police vehicle, namely the obligation to stop or facilitate its passage, and would have mounted, in the upper part of the vehicle, two devices with blue lights and a sound device, similar to those used by the police, gendarmerie or ambulance, without having the legal right to use them, according to the 2024 Performance Criteria regarding the establishment, framing and endowment of voluntary services and to private services for emergency situations”.

Thus, the 56-year-old man was penalized for contravention with a fine of 3,037.5 lei and with the suspension of exercising the right to drive for 120 days.

The fireman contested the fine.
