The decision to launch the operation may be made as early as this week, during the meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, scheduled for February 12. These reports were confirmed by several European diplomats, a military official and a person familiar with the matter.
The new NATO mission aims to increase the Alliance's presence in the Arctic, as well as ease tensions over Greenland between the US and European allies.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized in January that member states are in talks on further steps and cooperation to jointly ensure Arctic security.
According to media reports, a group of European countries led by Great Britain and Germany are considering increasing their military presence in Greenland. The aim is to convince US President Donald Trump that Europe is serious about the security of the Arctic region.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius assessed at the end of January in Berlin that the issue of the “Arctic Sentry” mission in Greenland, with the possible participation of the United States, was developing in a positive direction.
Greenland, an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, became the subject of diplomatic tensions between the United States, Denmark and several NATO countries in January after President Trump expressed his desire to take over the island. However, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump announced that he would not impose additional tariffs on goods from eight European countries that sent military delegations to Greenland.
