The US authorities are negotiating with the Argentine government the possibility of deporting immigrants from third countries to this country, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing anonymous sources. According to them, talks between Washington and Buenos Aires are at an advanced stage.

This type of agreement would allow US authorities to send non-citizens to Argentina. In the South American country, they could be offered to return to their homelands.
The negotiations are taking place at a time when the administration of US President Donald Trump is conducting a large-scale and aggressive campaign in the country to deport people staying there without appropriate permits.
In an effort to fulfill its announcement of mass deportations of illegal immigrants, the Trump administration is increasingly relying on agreements to return these people to third countries. Migrants who are not citizens of these countries have already been sent back to Costa Rica, El Salvador, Eswatini and Panama.
The Argentine government, led by President Javier Milei, has also intensified its anti-immigrant rhetoric, boasting, among other things, record numbers of people expelled from the country and sending police into action against illegal immigrants in the suburbs of Buenos Aires.
Milei is considered one of Trump's biggest allies in Latin America. In September 2025, the US government announced a USD 20 billion currency support program for Argentina, which helped the Mileia party win the parliamentary elections. (PAP)
