The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, said Thursday evening, on Digi24, that the invitation addressed to Romania by the American President Donald Trump to be part of the new “Council for Peace” is “an honor”, but the participation depends on the compatibility of this body with the international obligations of the Romanian state.
“It is an invitation that honors us. Its main objective is the stabilization of the situation in Gaza. Somehow it is a tool that the US proposes to put into practice a resolution of the UN Security Council”, said Nicușor Dan.
The head of state specified that the initial draft of the Charter of this body raised problems not only for Romania, but also for other countries invited to participate. According to him, the negotiations could last “weeks or even months”.
“The way in which the initial Charter of this body was drafted raised some problems for Romania and other states as well. As soon as we received it, we started to consult with each other. Now we have all entered into a process of negotiating this Charter so that it is compatible with other international treaties, sometimes even with the constitutions of some countries. The process will last weeks or even months”, continued the leader from Cotroceni.
“The USA is our strategic partner and we want to be part of a body that stabilizes the Middle East region, but we do not want to violate other international obligations – the UN Charter or the EU Treaty,” Nicușor Dan emphasized.
The Donald Trump administration is asking countries that want a permanent seat on its new Peace Council to contribute at least $1 billion.
