Folk calendar

Anton – winter, Antonina – half

Very little information has survived to this day about the Monk Anthony of Chernoezersk, in whose honor Antonov Day is celebrated. His life dates back to the 16th century. It is known that he founded a monastery in the Novgorod region. The relics of Saint Anthony were buried in the temple, from which only the foundation has survived to this day.

The day of Anton the Winterman was also called the day of Antonina the Half. Both of these meant that half of winter was behind (“Antonina has come—half of winter”), and spring was already shining ahead. True, they didn’t recommend trusting the warm weather that day. “Perezimnik will reassure, warm, and then deceive – it will cover everything with frost”; “Anton is cunning from all sides,” people said about this. In addition, they noticed: if the sky is clouded, it means a blizzard.

On this day, it was customary to bake oatmeal koloboks, which symbolized the sun. To do this, oatmeal was mixed with wheat flour, butter, eggs and salt were added. All this was mixed with milk and, after kneading the dough, small buns were made from it.

Also, damage to Anton the winter should have been avoided. To do this, a line was drawn across the path leading to the courtyard with a sharp sickle. It was believed that in this way it was possible to “cut off” damage.
