Philip's day
The Orthodox Church dedicates this day to St. Philip of Moscow. Metropolitan Philip lived during the time of Ivan the Terrible and was known as an exposer of the oprichnina. Because of this, he fell into disgrace, was sent into exile, and later killed by Malyuta Skuratov.
In Rus', Filippov's day was considered a day of household chores. During the holidays, a lot of such things usually accumulated, and people tried to put both their home and themselves in order. On this day, it was customary to start cleaning, doing laundry, and also going to the bathhouse. It was called “flushing away the Christmastide.”
