Addressing “global elites” at the annual World Economic Forum in the Swiss mountain resort of Davos, on Tuesday, the French president wore dark-colored, reflective sunglasses, which the French luxury eyewear brand Henry Jullien said it had given him as a gift in 2024, writes Agerpres.

The Elysee Palace said Macron's choice to wear sunglasses during his speech, which took place indoors, was to protect his eyes from a broken blood vessel. He did not confirm the brand of the glasses.

Memes, comments and speculation about Macron's appearance exploded on social media after his speech, with some supporters praising his look and opponents dismissing him as bombastic or speculating about his health.

A meme, titled “Duel in Davos“, was intended as a parody “Top Gun“, with Macron and Trump looking at each other, both wearing military-style aviator suits, with Macron looking tiny next to Trump and wearing oversized aviator sunglasses.

References to the 1986 film starring Tom Cruise were ubiquitous.

“Trump: be careful…Macron is here”one user wrote on X, alongside a photo of the French president wearing aviator glasses. “Couldn't he find some more sober glasses?”another user asked.

Italian right-wing newspaper Libero named Macron “a great boaster”.

Even some of Macron's colleagues expressed themselves on this subject. The Minister of European Affairs, Benjamin Haddad, posted a version of the meme “Soyboy vs Yes Chad” with Chad wearing aviator glasses and wrapped in the French flag.

Global searches for Henry Jullien glasses also rose, peaking around 07:00 am on Wednesday, according to Google Trends. A spokesperson for the brand said that the company is receiving an unusually high number of calls. The French luxury firm, owned by Italian group iVision Tech, said the model worn by President Macron is the Pacific S 01, priced at 659 euros ($770) on its website. Shares of iVision Tech rose nearly 6% on Wednesday.
