U.S. Air Force General Alexus G. Grynkewich took over as NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) on July 4, 2025, in a ceremony attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Grynkewich, nicknamed “Grinch”, succeeded US General Christopher G. Cavoli as the 21st SACEUR commander, EFE and Agerpres news agencies report.
Traditionally, this position is held by a four-star general in the United States Army. The head of the SACEUR is also the Allied Command Operations (ACO) commander, responsible for the planning and execution of all NATO operations.
