After Donald Trump threatened on Saturday to impose additional tariffs on several countries on the Old Continent if the United States fails to buy Greenland, European leaders reacted with harsh statements, and some of them tried to speak directly to the American president.

Among those trying to talk to Trump is British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has not yet succeeded, despite the good personal relationship he has with him, nor the well-known “special relationship” that has lasted for decades between Great Britain and the United States.

Meloni: “I told him what I was thinking”

However, Georgia Meloni did it, who also has a good relationship with the American president, being considered at one point in Europe as a possible “Trump tamer”, who said of the head of the Italian government that she is a “fantastic woman”.

“I spoke to Donald Trump a few hours ago and told him what I think,” she revealed to the press during a visit to Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

“I think imposing new sanctions today would be a mistake,” said Georgia Meloni, quoted by France Presse.

Meloni, considered an ally of Mr. Trump in Europe, tried to play down the conflict, saying “there is a problem of understanding and communication” between Europe and the United States regarding Greenland.

According to her, NATO has a role to play in this growing crisis.

“NATO is the forum in which we must strive to organize together deterrents against any hostile interference in clearly strategic territory, and I think the fact that NATO has started working on this topic is a good initiative,” she told the press.

Meloni added that “from the American point of view, the message coming from this side of the Atlantic was not clear.”

“It seems to me that the risk is that the initiatives of certain European countries have been interpreted as anti-American, which was obviously not the intention”, she also stated, without specifying what exactly she was referring to.

Starmer sees her relationship with Trump tested

Since Keir Starmer came to power, rapprochement with Donald Trump has been a central tenet of his foreign policy, says the BBC's Harry Farley, adding that this is being tested more than any other time on Sunday.

The White House has, in effect, launched an economic war against its closest allies.

According to the British journalist, officials in Downing Street will try to schedule a telephone conversation between the Prime Minister and the US President.

The last time Starmer wanted to talk to President Trump — after the U.S. attack on Venezuela — it took days for the conversation to happen.
