EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told MEPs privately that the current world situation may be a “good time” to start drinking, according to Politico.

In a discussion with the leaders of political groups in the European Parliament, Kallas told them she was not a big drinker, but now might be the time to start, two people in the room said.

The head of European diplomacy made this joke on Wednesday, around the same time that the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland were meeting in Washington with the US Vice President, JD Vance, and the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in the context of threats circulated by Donald Trump regarding the possibility of taking control of the island.

The joke made at the Conference of Presidents, the format that brings together group leaders in the European Parliament, came after they had started wishing each other a happy new year. MEPs added that global events made the situation not so happy, according to those present.

According to Politico, geopolitics has become the EU's most pressing issue, given fears that Trump could annex Greenland, massive protests in Iran, the US operation in Venezuela, and conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.

Recently, the head of the EU's foreign policy declared for the publication that she is ready to propose a new round of sanctions against Iran, in the context of the repression unleashed by the regime against the protesters.

Since the beginning of the protests in Iran, at least 2,400 demonstrators have been killed, according to data provided by the US-based non-governmental organization, cited by CNN.
