I cooked it yesterday – and today my stomach doesn’t feel heavy: stewed cabbage with apple and chicken – light and satisfying

If after the holidays you feel like your stomach is full and the thought of food makes you tired, try this simple stewed cabbage. It's warm, soft, with a hint of acidity from the apple and tender chicken that satisfies your hunger without being overwhelming. Prepares in 30 minutes and requires only one pan.

You will need:

white cabbage – 500 g
chicken fillet – 250 g
apple – 1 pc.
onion – 1 pc.
carrots – 1 pc.
tomato paste – 1 tbsp. l.
vegetable oil – 2 tbsp. l.
water – 150 ml
bay leaf – 1 pc.
salt, black pepper, a pinch of ground cumin – to taste
fresh herbs – for serving

How to cook:

  • Chop the cabbage not too finely, it should retain its texture.
  • Cut the onion into half rings, carrots into strips, and apple into slices.
  • Cut the chicken into small pieces.
  • Heat the oil in a deep frying pan, fry the onion until transparent, add the carrots, fry for 3 minutes.
  • Add the chicken and cook until lightly browned.
  • Add cabbage, stir, simmer for 5 minutes, it will settle a little.
  • Pour in water, add tomato paste, bay leaf, salt, pepper and cumin.
  • Cover with a lid, reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • 3 minutes before the end, add the apple; it will add sourness, but will not fall apart.
  • Sprinkle with chopped herbs before serving.

The dish is juicy, but not watery, with a balance of sweetness and sourness.

Within an hour after dinner you will feel: your stomach is soft, your mood is calm, and thoughts about food have disappeared.

Bon appetit!

Question and answer:

Can it be made without chicken?
Yes. For a vegetarian version, just increase the portion of apple and add a pinch of smoked paprika for depth of flavor.

Is sauerkraut okay?
No, it will give a sharp acid. What you need is fresh cabbage.

Can I cook in a slow cooker?
Yes. In the “Extinguishing” mode for 40 minutes. But on the stove, the taste is richer due to light evaporation.

How long does the dish last?
Up to 3 days in the refrigerator. On the second day it only becomes tastier.
