On Sunday evening, officers boarded the vessel in the port of Liepāja. The ship and its crew have not been detained yet, but the police do not rule out any scenario and are also investigating the case for intentional destruction or damage to the public telecommunications network.
According to the Latvian services, the exact causes of the incident are not yet known. The failure occurred on Friday in Latvian waters, said Arvis Zile, head of the Crisis Management Center.
The incident did not affect Latvian users of telecommunications networks. Local media report that the cable operator is the Swedish company Arelion. This is the second case of damage to an underwater cable in the Baltic Sea in recent days.
Previous case of undersea cable damage
On December 31, the cable of a Finnish operator in Estonia's economic zone was damaged. Finnish police suspect that the cable may have been severed by the anchor of the Fitburg cargo ship sailing from St. Petersburg towards Israel.
On Sunday, a court in Helsinki agreed to arrest an Azerbaijani citizen, one of the members of the ship's 14-person crew. The police imposed a travel ban on another crew member, a Russian.
