Melenchon announced that he would run for office on Sunday evening on TF1 television. This decision was expected, even though in 2022 Melenchon suggested that he would pass the baton to a new generation.

The declaration of the head and founder of LFI is unfavorable for other left-wing politicians who were counting on a common candidate of the entire left, selected in the primary elections. Currently, a year before the elections, no left-wing candidate is catching up with far-right politicians in popularity polls. Support for Marine Le Pen and her colleague Jordan Bardelli exceeds 30 percent.

The election date has not been officially set yet. Macron's second – and last – term in office ends on May 13, 2027. According to the constitution, the elections should be held 20 to 35 days before this date, which would mean that it would be April 2027. The daily “Le Monde” recognizes about 20 politicians as potential candidates in the elections.
