A promotional video released in May 2024 for the Le Constellation bar in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, where a fire broke out that killed around 40 people, shows the drink being served with fireworks, according to the BBC.

The cause of the fire in the Le Constellation bar has not been confirmed by the authorities. People who escaped the burning bar with their lives said they saw a waitress place “a birthday candle” on a bottle of champagne, which set the ceiling on fire.

A May 2024 video shared on YouTube by the account @ConstellationCransMontana shows women wearing motorcycle helmets walking around the bar with alcohol bottles topped with fireworks.

“Constellation Crans-Montana welcomes you every day from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., 365 days a year, without interruption,” reads the description accompanying the video clip.

What officials say about the cause of the fire

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Valais canton general prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud said authorities would investigate the cause of the fire, but warned that “the investigation will take a long time.”

The prosecutor said that “several hypotheses” have been put forward as to the cause of the fire, and the preferred theory at this time is that of a “general fire which caused a conflagration”. It added that many witnesses had been interviewed and that the phones found would be analyzed.

The Forensic Institute in Zurich has already been mandated to conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, Pilloud said.

Earlier, two eyewitnesses to the fire told French media that waitresses had placed “anniversary candles” on top of champagne bottles, one of which was then set alight.

“Within seconds the whole ceiling was on fire. It was all wood,” they said.

In the press conference, prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud was asked about these testimonies, according to which champagne bottles with candles could have caused the fire.

She said she could not confirm anything while the investigation was ongoing.
