The US Dollar (USD) is one of the world's main trading currencies. A significant part of international transactions are carried out using American currency. This and the fact that some central banks around the world use the dollar to create foreign exchange reserves means that the USD still maintains its value. Tourists also often take dollars with them as easily convertible cash when going on holiday abroad. It is worth noting that dollars as the official means of payment can be paid not only in the United States, but also in countries such as El Salvador, Panama, Zimbabwe, Ecuador. One dollar is divided into one hundred cents, and the dollar symbol is the distinctive $ sign.
The currency was established on the basis of the Coinage Act of 1792. The decision to create its own currency was related to the emerging statehood of the territory that had until recently been dependent on Great Britain. The winning war and the Peace of Paris of 1783 that sealed its result meant that the new entity on the political map of the world had to quickly increase its independence and emphasize its distinctiveness. Establishing its own coin became crucial for the United States at that time. Initially, the dollar was a currency closely linked to gold (gold parity). An ounce of pure gold was worth $20.67, from 1934 this value changed and one ounce of gold was worth $35. This link finally disappeared in 1973 and the dollar became a floating currency.
The strength and importance of the dollar as a global currency was decided by the Bretton Woods conference, when in 1944 delegates from 44 Allied countries established the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Delegates also agreed to defend the value of currencies. Initially, the reference was to be gold, but ultimately the countries' central banks defended the value of currencies in relation to the US dollar. This definitely contributed to the strengthening and increase in the value of the dollar.
