The talks regarding Ukraine are not about ending the war, but about who will be able to win US President Donald Trump to their side – says the daily “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. Russia, Europe and Ukraine are fighting for the favor of the American leader.

“Since Donald Trump took office at the beginning of the year, all the discussions about ending Russia's war against Ukraine have really been about one thing: who will be able to win over to his side the American president who, above all, cares about his own image of greatness? – convinces “FAZ”.
He claims that the Kremlin “has already achieved some successes in this field”, and their “culmination was the red carpet for war criminal Vladimir Putin (during a meeting with Trump – PAP) in Alaska in August.”
“In a diplomatic defensive fight, Europeans and Ukrainians managed to prevent the worst with great effort. Washington neither completely sided with Moscow nor completely abandoned Ukraine,” the daily notes.
Although Russian propaganda and “its meek enablers in the West” portray European countries as sabotaging progress towards ending the war, in fact “the Russian regime is not at all interested in serious negotiations.” The Kremlin “is watching the European-Ukrainian-American negotiation spectacle from the sidelines, without making any concessions itself” – writes “FAZ”.
According to the German newspaper, only increased pressure could encourage Putin to enter into serious talks. “The cracks between Europe and the US and within the EU itself are an incentive for him to continue his policy of violence,” concludes “FAZ.”
