The former second coach of the French national team, Jean-Louis Gasset, has died at the age of 72, announced the Olympique Marseille club, where he was head coach in 2024. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Gasset led Marseille to the Europa League semi-finals, where the team lost 4-0 to Italian outfit Atalanta. Gasset worked with the French national team between 2010 and 2012 as an assistant to head coach Laurent Blanc. Throughout his career, he also held other coaching positions at Montpellier, Caen, Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux and other clubs.

From 2022 to January 2024, Gasset was the Ivory Coast national team coach. He was sacked after the group stage of the 2024 African Cup of Nations, a tournament hosted by his own country.

However, the hosts progressed into the competition as one of the best third-placed teams, qualifying for the knockout stage, and eventually won the title under Gasset's assistant Emerse Fae. A month after returning to France, Gasset was appointed coach of Olympique Marseille, but stayed for only four months.

He returned to Montpellier last season, but with the team in danger of relegation, he was sacked in April. Gasset spent most of his football career at Montpellier, where his father was one of the founders of the club.
