Folk calendar
Mina Day
On this day the memory of the martyr Mina the Eloquent is celebrated, who suffered for the faith at the beginning of the 4th century along with saints Hermogenes and Evgraf.
In Rus', the martyr Mina was considered a healer of eye diseases. There was a legend that this saint had the gift of working miracles and actually healed people with poor eyesight. In Rus' they believed that Mina not only gives the eyes physical health, but also removes the veil from them, which prevents them from distinguishing good from evil, and truth from lies.
This belief is also due to the fact that from the day of St. Mina the day begins to arrive – still imperceptibly, but surely. “From St. Mina, darkness passes us by,” the Russian people said on this occasion and added, remembering the saint’s ability to heal eye diseases: “From St. Mina, the veil is from the eyes.”
A spell was usually cast on Mina against the midnight owl – an evil spirit that prevents children from sleeping.
