The main task of German soldiers in the north and east of Poland is to be engineering activities, said a spokesman for the German Ministry of Defense in an interview with “Bild”. Specifically, this includes: about building trenches, laying barbed wire or creating anti-tank barriers.

This is to be the Bundeswehr's contribution to securing Poland's eastern border with Belarus and Russia as part of Operation “Shield East”, which has been ongoing since May 2024 in the border area with Belarus and Russia.

The mission of Bundeswehr soldiers is to last according to current plans until the end of 2027. According to the ministry's spokesman, several dozen soldiers of the land armed forces and supporting units will serve in Poland.

According to the German side's declarations, sending Bundeswehr soldiers to Poland does not require the consent of the Bundestag, because it is not a mission that would involve a direct threat to the soldiers.

Several German Eurofighter fighters were deployed at the beginning of December near Malbork, at the 22nd Tactical Air Base. Airplanes participate in patrols. About 150 Bundeswehr soldiers were sent along with the planes. (PAP)
