The Kremlin said on Tuesday that claims by European officials that Vladimir Putin intends to bring back the Soviet Union are completely unfounded. Moreover, allegations that the Russian president is preparing an invasion of a NATO member state are being considered “utter nonsense”.

Putin was born during the Soviet era and in 2005 called the collapse of the USSR “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century”, arguing that tens of millions of Russians were pushed into poverty, and Russia faced the risk of disintegration, notes Reuters.

But critics say Putin's Russia is sliding toward a combination of repression and absurdity, reminiscent of the Brezhnev era. At the same time, Western leaders warn that if he wins in Ukraine, the Russian president could one day attack NATO.

Putin has repeatedly rejected these scenarios and said such a move would be illogical for Russia, given the conventional military superiority of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Moscow's replica for Berlin

The Kremlin's statements come after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that Putin wants to bring it back “the former Soviet Union” and that Europe must defend itself against Russia's intentions, which it claims are evidenced in its official doctrines.

This is not trueDmitry Peskov replied when asked about Merz's claims. “Vladimir Putin does not want to restore the USSR, because it is impossible, and he himself has said this repeatedly”stated the Kremlin spokesman.

Peskov added that such remarks do not show respect for international partners: “Talking about it is not respectful to our partners. Mr. Merz doesn't seem to know that.”.

Regarding the alleged preparation of an attack against NATO, Peskov was categorical: “As for preparing an attack on NATO, that is total nonsense”.
