The dishwasher stopped stinking, and the glasses began to sparkle – all without citric acid: life hack from grandma

Even the most modern dishwasher eventually begins to smell musty, leave a white residue on glasses and does not handle grease well. The reason is not a breakdown, but the accumulation of hard water, food debris and grease in the filter, rubber band and tubes. Many people run for expensive tablets or citric acid, but the older generation knew it was simpler and safer.

What you will need:

Baking soda – 3 tablespoons
Fine salt – 1 tablespoon
Lemon – 1 piece or 2 tbsp. l. juice
Soft brush or old toothbrush

How to do:

  • Remove the filter and rinse it thoroughly under running water.
  • Mix baking soda and salt, apply to a damp brush and clean the rubber seal around the edge of the door, where black mold often accumulates.
  • Place a whole cut lemon in the top basket or pour the juice into a mug and place it on the bottom basket.
  • Pour baking soda directly into the bottom of the machine, but not into the dispenser.
  • Start the hottest program without dishes.
  • After the cycle is complete, wipe the door and seal with a dry cloth.

Soda gently dissolves grease and scale, salt enhances the abrasive effect without scratching, and lemon kills odors and leaves freshness. Together they clean not only the visible parts, but also the internal tubes.

The method is suitable for all dishwashers with a stainless drum. Do not use on machines with plastic bottoms; baking soda may leave minor scratches.

After the first time, the glasses will no longer be “matte”, the damp and moldy smell will disappear, and the machine will work more quietly and efficiently.

Question and answer:

Why does my dishwasher smell musty?
Due to food debris in the filter, grease in the rubber band and condensation in the tubes. Over time, mold develops there.

Is it possible without lemon?
You can, but the smell will remain. Lemon not only cleanses, but also disinfects. As a last resort, add 1 tbsp. l. apple cider vinegar.

Why do glasses become frosted?
Due to hard water and detergent residues. Baking soda softens water and removes plaque.
