The home address is not written on the new slips with a chip, it is stored electronically. For this reason, many of the holders of the new identity cards ran into problems at the counters of some state or private institutions. Libertatea newspaper asked the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) if there is a risk of such situations occurring during the voting as well.

By the end of November, almost 900,000 Romanians have made their electronic identity cards. The new identity document is the size of a bank card, it has higher security standards, but the home address is not printed, but is stored exclusively on the electronic chip.

In some situations, including at banks or other state institutions, people with electronic identity cards had to present the residence attestation certificate. That's because most don't yet have electronic card readers and the necessary apps to access this vital information.

In tomorrow's elections for Bucharest, is the certificate of attestation of domicile required? In an answer for Freedom, the Permanent Electoral Authority says no.

“The access of Romanian citizens with the right to vote, holders of an electronic identity card, to the polling station to vote is not conditional on the presentation of a certificate attesting the domicile or residence”, the representatives from the Permanent Electoral Authority for Freedom sent.

For local elections, citizens can only vote in the precinct of their domicile or residence.

The tablets are compatible with the new bulletins

AEP also reported that the devices used so far in the elections are compatible with scanning the new electronic identity cards.

This was also communicated to all members and presidents of polling stations, for the elections of December 7. The process will be carried out exclusively through the IT application for verifying the right to vote, available in every polling station in Bucharest.

With its help, the identification data is automatically retrieved, and if this operation does not work at a given moment, the CNP of the voter will be entered manually in the database, to validate the home or residence address, according to the cited source.

What happens to the stamp

On the old ballots, after voting, people receive a sticker stamp with the word “VOTED” on the back of the ballot.

In the case of holders of electronic identity cards, the sticker stamp will no longer be applied to them.

“No sticker stamps will be applied to identity cards,” AEP replied.

In fact, in the officially issued guide for these elections, it is clearly specified that “VOTED and the polling date DO NOT apply to electronic identity cards”.
