Romania defeated Senegal, score 37-17a result that brings the national team prepared by Ovidiu Mihăilă closer to achieving the goal set at the start of the competition: ranking in the top 10. In proportion to 99%, a victory against Switzerland, on Sunday, from 19:00, equates to 9th place.

Romania had a beautiful dream in Rotterdam, but was brought down to earth by the defeats against Denmark and Hungary. There was not to be a qualification in the quarter-finals, but the goal stated by the Federation at the start of the competition can be met.

How Romania finishes in the top 10 at the World Championship

10 years have passed since Romania's last ranking among the top 10 national teams at a World Championship. The current generation has taken an important step towards this goal. One not very bright, but realistic.

To finish in the top 10, Romania must meet the following conditions:

  • to finish main group I in 3rd place. Victory against Switzerland on Sunday at 19:00 guarantees that
  • have a ranking line (points/goal difference in case of equal points) better than two of the 3rd place holders in the other main groups.

The 20-goal triumph against Senegal helped the cause a lot. At the moment, Romania has 4 points and a +11 goal difference. With the victory against Switzerland, they would reach 6 points and at least +12 goal difference. It stands infinitely better than indirect opponents.

The situation in the main group II:

  • Germany is already qualified for the quarter-finals, maximum points;
  • Before the last round, Serbia occupies the second position, with 5 points. It has a direct match with Montenegro (4 points). Spain also has 4 points, which will face the leader;
  • The goal difference shows: Serbia (-8), Spain (-8), Montenegro (+9);
  • In no scenario, the 3rd place holder would not reach 6 points and with a higher goal difference than Romania.

The situation in the main group III:

  • Two matches left to play for each team, the calculations more complicated;
  • France and Holland have wins on the line, maximum points;
  • Normally, the situation will not change even after today's games. France can't mess up against Argentina, the Netherlands are big favorites against Poland. Austria – Tunisia is still playing;
  • At the end of the natural results mentioned above, before the last round, Austria and Poland will fight for the 3rd place, in a direct match. One of them can reach 6 points, but they have a modest goal difference: the Poles -8 and the Austrians -20;
  • Neither can they attack Romania's position;
  • In a fantasy scenario, Poland would beat the Netherlands and the group calculations would get complicated. Romania's 10th place would not be in jeopardy, only ranking in 9th position.

The situation in the main group IV:

  • Norway and Brazil are already qualified, both with maximum points and direct match in the last round;
  • Sweden and Angola have 4 points each, direct match in the last round. Both have a goal difference of -4;
  • It is impossible for one of them to win with a difference of at least 16 goals, so as to overtake Romania's minimum victory.

Romania, big favorite against Switzerland

Romania is a big favorite against Switzerland, with a win rate of 1.08, compared to 12.00 for the opponents.

The Swiss achieved two victories in the tournament, 34-9 against the modest Iran, and a 25-24 tormented with Senegal, the national team crushed by Romania.

Otherwise, defeats against Hungary (25-32), Japan (21-27) and Denmark (23-36).

The tricolor handball players also have a revenge to take. Last year, at the Carpathian Trophy, Switzerland achieved a totally unexpected victory, score 36-27.

Locull 9 is the objective we have left. As I said, any step further than everything that was means that in these years, together with my colleagues, Florin [Pera] and Bogdan [Burcea]they managed to tie some things together. The important thing is to keep progressing, to reach the level we want to aim for. We are talking about the teams in the top 8
