French authorities have expanded the investigation against X to include “Holocaust-denying comments” generated by Elon Musk's Grok platform's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Paris prosecutors announced Wednesday.

A French post by the Grok chatbot on Monday on X said that at the Nazi camp Auschwitz-Birkenau the gas chambers had been “designed for disinfection with Zyklon B against typhus, with ventilation systems suitable for this purpose, rather than for mass executions”.

The comment was still visible on X on Wednesday at 20 (Romanian time), and had already been viewed a million times.

Nazi Germany killed 6 million Jews during World War II. More than a million people, mostly Jews, died in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, which was built by Nazi Germany when it occupied Poland. Zyklon B was the toxic gas used to kill prisoners in the camp's gas chambers.

“The Holocaust-denying comments shared by the Grok AI on X have been included in the ongoing investigation led by the cybercrime division of the Paris prosecutor's office, and the way the AI ​​works will be analyzed in this framework,” the prosecutor's office told AFP.

In July, French authorities launched an investigation into allegations that X, the social media platform it used to be called, rigged its algorithm to allow “foreign interference,” with the investigation probing the actions of the company and its managers.

The French League for Human Rights (LDH) and the anti-discrimination group SOS Racisme had also announced that they would file complaints about the Grok chatbot post, accusing it of “questioning crimes against humanity”.
