Former president Traian Băsescu said on Romania TV on Saturday that the current head of state will commit “a big mistake” if he presents the report on the cancellation of the 2024 presidential elections, because “it was not his job” to do such a thing, reports News.ro.
Băsescu said that Nicușor Dan had no involvement in the 2024 presidential elections, but “someone put the problem in his hands and he took it”.
“Where I think the president makes a big mistake and is in a trap, in fact – to present the report with the reasons why the presidential elections were canceled in 2024. What is the business of the president Nicusor Dan? He did not run then. Someone put the problem in his hands and he took it, I think inadvertently, I know, out of the desire to give an answer, but it was not his job”, he declared the former president.
In the opinion of Traian Băsescu, once he was validated as president, Nicușor Dan should have asked the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) for “the transcripts and all the documents of the meeting where the issue was debated”, and then give them to the general prosecutor to start the investigation regarding the annulment of the elections.
He believes that “it is also very good from the point of view of the image outside the country” if the “authorized institutions” deal with the case of annulment of the elections, not the politicians.
“How long will the politicians, the CSAT, the president have the obligation to give answers, first of all, it will not convince anyone and, secondly, it will always be a question mark why the politicians have to solve it and not the state institutions, in such situations. We are discussing a serious violation of the Constitution when we discuss canceling elections”, explained Băsescu, who also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the security structures and prosecutors.
On December 3, responding to reporters' questions, President Nicușor Dan stated that the report on the cancellation of the first round of the 2024 presidential elections will be publicly presented “perhaps at the end of January, so to give an approximate deadline”.
