Units of the German armed forces present in Poland to operate the Patriot systems were activated on Friday after they detected near Polish airspace the presence of Russian fighter jets operating in western Ukraine, informs EFE.

According to the Sunday edition of the Bild newspaper, Russian MiG-31 fighter jets flew in the direction of Poland on Friday and provoked the reaction of the Polish air defense and the German military operating Patriot systems on the territory of this country, writes Agerpres.

“The Polish army and NATO forces stationed there reacted quickly and put the Patriot air defense systems on alert,” Bild noted.

“The systems could have immediately launched missiles to shoot down enemy flying objects,” the quoted newspaper added.

Germany has two operational Patriot systems at Rzeszów airfield in southeastern Poland, near Poland's border with Ukraine.
