“Unirii” A8 highway: Two sections of 47 kilometers in Transylvania, contracted for over 1.1 billion euros. When the works start

The contracts for the construction of another 47 kilometers on the “Unirii” A8 highway were signed on Wednesday by the National Road Investment Company. The contracts are worth more than 1 billion euros and cover two lots of 32.4 km and 14.4 km in the Transylvania area.
CNIR signed the contracts for the design and execution of lots 1C Sărățeni-Joseni (32.4 km) and 1D Joseni-Ditrău (14.4 km), which together have a value of almost 6 billion lei.
“We will give the order to start the works for the spring of 2026 to allow the builders to prepare over the winter, to mobilize, to make a strategy to start the design work immediately”, Gabriel Budescu, the general director of CNIR, told HotNews.
The first design and execution contract, the one for lot 1C Sărățeni-Joseni, was signed with the Association SA & PE CONSTRUCT SRL (LIDER) – TEHNOSTRADE SRL SPEDITION UMB – EURO ASFALT, for a value of almost 5 billion lei.
The completion time is 54 months, of which 14 months for design and 40 months for execution.
Lot 1 C Sărățeni-Joseni, which takes place in Mureș and Harghita counties, has a length of 32.4 kilometers and includes:
- 39 bridges and passages
- 3 one-way tunnels
- 4 poles and 2 passages for the permeability of animals (ecoducts).
The length of passages and tunnels is approximately 16 kilometers representing 50% of the total length of the highway lot. The longest passage will be 1,736 meters (the passage over DN 13A and the railway), and the highest viaduct will be 45 meters.

The second contract, with a Romanian-Bulgarian association
The second contract signed today is for lot 1D Joseni-Ditrău with a length of 14.4 kilometers and a value of 820 million lei.
The builder is the association Danlin XXL(Lider) – Groma Hold-Intertranscom Impex SRL
Lot 1D Joseni-Ditrău in Harghita County has a duration of 34 months, of which 10 months for design and 24 months for execution.
The section will have 21 passages and viaducts, of which 3 ecoducts for the permeability of animals, but also a road junction at Ditrău.
“For both batches, temporary discharges are provided, thus ensuring independent operation”, announces the CNIR.

A8 mountain, the new “Umbrărescu” highway
After awarding and executing a large part of the “Moldovei” A7 Motorway, the group of companies of the businessman Dorinel Umbrărescu came to dominate the construction of the mountain sectors of the “Unirii” A8 Motorway, which connects Moldova to Transylvania.
Of the five mountain sectors, UMB was contracted on four of them, while on another section it lost the contract in favor of an association led by the Romanian builder Danlin XXL.
Of the five sectors, four are managed by CNIR, and one was tendered and contracted by CNAIR.
Status of all sections on the A8 “Unirii” Motorway
The A8 motorway is planned to be around 300 kilometers in total and has been divided into 13 sections, in various stages of implementation and managed by two different state companies.
- Tg. Mureș – Miercurea Nirajului (1A) – 22 km, under construction – Contracted with Nurol, 2.4 billion lei (managed by CNAIR)
- Miercurea Nirajului – Sărățeni (1B) – 23.4 km, under design – Contracted with Ozaltin, 2.98 billion lei (managed by CNAIR)
- Sărățeni – Joseni (1C) – 32.4 km – Allocated to UMB, 4.94 billion lei (managed by CNIR)
- Joseni – Ditrău (1D) – 14.4 km – Assigned to Danlin XXL (Leader) – Groma Hold-Intertranscom Impex, 0.82 billion lei (managed by CNIR)
