Brazil's Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to begin serving a 27-year, three-month prison sentence for plotting an attempted coup, according to a court document.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the start of the execution of the sentence at the headquarters of the Federal Police of Brazil in Brasilia, where he has been detained since Saturday.

On Tuesday, the country's supreme court formally closed Bolsonaro's coup plot case, making his conviction final. The former president's appeal was rejected this month.

On September 27, Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election to leftist candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The former president has been under house arrest for more than 100 days in Brasilia for violating preventive measures in a separate case in which he was accused of seeking US intervention on his behalf.

In a hearing on Sunday, Jair Bolsonaro denied any intention to escape or try to remove the electronic bracelet from his ankle, blaming his behavior on a mixture of drugs prescribed by different doctors for his chronic hiccups, which made him imagine that there was a listening device inside the tracking device. The two drugs mentioned were pregabalin (antiepileptic) and sertraline (antidepressant).
