US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that his current peace proposal to end the war in Ukraine is not his final offer, his statements taking place in the context in which Ukraine and its European allies emphasized that the peace plan proposed by Trump can be a basis for discussions, but requires “additional efforts”, reports Reuters, taken by Agerpres.

“The war has to end one way or another,” Trump told reporters on Saturday. But the White House leader said “no” when asked if this was his final offer.

“We will not achieve lasting peace by making concessions”

American senators, Democrats and Republicans, expressed their “serious concerns about the details of President Donald Trump's plan” to end the war in Ukraine, in a statement published on Saturday, reports AFP.

“We will not achieve a lasting peace by offering concession after concession to Putin and fatally degrading Ukraine's ability to defend itself. History has taught us that Putin understands only force and will not honor any agreement unless it is guaranteed by coercion,” wrote three elected Democrats, an independent senator and a Republican senator.

“We need to consult closely with our Ukrainian and NATO partners on the way forward. We should put real pressure on Russia to come to the negotiating table,” the statement added.

Republican Roger Wicker, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued a separate statement Friday.

“This so-called 'peace plan' has real problems and I am very skeptical of its ability to bring peace. Ukraine should not be forced to cede territory to one of the world's most notorious war criminals, Vladimir Putin,” the senator said, adding: “The size and disposition of Ukraine's armed forces is a sovereign choice of its government and its people.”
