Romania obtained 109 votes in the UN General Assembly in the competition for a judge position at the UN Dispute Tribunal (UNDT), after a selection process carried out in two stages – a technical one and several rounds of voting. The position will be taken over by judge Adina Elvira-Ghiță, who has over 17 years of experience and will begin her seven-year term in July 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed in a statement.

The campaign to support Romania's candidacy was coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the technical evaluations were carried out by the UN Internal Justice Council. The election confirms Romania's position in the judicial architecture of the UN and continues the path affirmed through previous representations at the ICJ and the ICC.

“Romania has exemplary professionals who succeed, through their work, in increasing our respect and influence. Our human capital, at home and in the world, is the most important capital we have. The candidates also went through three stages rigorously organized by the Internal Justice Council of the United Nations. The victory in New York of Mrs. Judge Adina Elvira-Ghiță and Romanian diplomacy is due to this respect built over time and a moment of trust in which Romanian professionals can see, not only that the state does not want to hinder them, but that we work to be their allies and open doors, as they, and Romania, deserve”said Oana Țoiu, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs

“The procedure for appointing a judge to one of the two UN tribunals – UNDT and UNAT – is extremely rigorous and complex. For those who are not familiar with the voting mechanisms in the United Nations General Assembly, it is difficult to understand the extraordinary effort on which such a result is based, a team effort, of great intensity in the run-up to the vote. I am fully grateful for the excellent collaboration and the special support I have benefited from and hope to bring, through my activity, an honorable contribution to my country”said Adina Elvira-Ghiță.
