Russia has introduced life imprisonment for inducing teenagers to commit sabotage

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law strengthening criminal liability for sabotage, including introducing penalties of up to life imprisonment for involving minors in sabotage activities. The document was published on the official portal legal information. The innovations have already come into force.

The law supplemented Article 281.1 (promotion of sabotage activities) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation with a provision providing for liability for inducing, recruiting or involving a minor in committing sabotage. Such a crime may result in life imprisonment or imprisonment for a term of 10 to 20 years with a fine of 500 thousand rubles to 1 million rubles.

Amendments have also been made to Article 205.1 on promoting terrorist activities. Committing such an act is punishable by life imprisonment or imprisonment for a term of 10 to 20 years with a fine of 500 thousand rubles to 1 million rubles.

Also, according to the signed law, the age of criminal responsibility for a number of crimes has been reduced to 14 years, including promoting terrorist activities, organizing a terrorist community, sabotage, facilitating sabotage activities, undergoing training for the purpose of sabotage, organizing a sabotage community and participating in it. The list of crimes for which a suspended sentence is not assigned has been supplemented by participation in a sabotage community.
