Demonstrators stormed the COP30 conference venue, injuring two security guards


According to Reuters, a group of protesting representatives of indigenous communities forced their way into the facility. Some carried banners with the slogan: “Our land is not for sale.”

The security guards managed to push the demonstrators away and then barricade the entrance with tables. Delegates were asked to stay in the building and were only allowed to leave once the protesters had dispersed.

One security guard told Reuters he was hit with a heavy drumstick. Security took several batons from the protesters.

A representative of the Tupinamba people, one of Brazil's indigenous communities, said his group is dissatisfied with how their territory is managed.

— We can't eat the money. We want our lands to be free from agricultural businesses, oil extraction, illegal mining and logging, said Tupinamba leader, who uses the name Gilmar.

Brazilian COP30 organizers announced that one of the goals of this year's climate conference is to give a voice to indigenous communities. Dozens of community leaders arrived in Belem by boat to participate in negotiations and seek greater participation in forest management.
