Nicușor Dan, on raising the minimum wage: “We would like it, but it can send people into unemployment”

Nicușor Dan claims that the minimum wage increase must be carefully discussed between the Government, employers and unions, because a forced increase could affect small companies and lead to job losses.

President Nicușor Dan stated that, although everyone wants higher wages in Romania, the decision to increase the minimum wage must be taken with caution, depending on the real capacity of the economy. He warned that a sharp increase could put pressure on small and medium-sized firms, risking closures and layoffs.

“Obviously we would like salaries in Romania to be high. However, it is always a question of balance between what the economy can afford”emphasized Nicușor Dan.

“Increasing the minimum wage can drive companies out of the market”

He explained that a forced increase in the minimum wage could affect the competitiveness of companies operating at the limit.

“Raising the minimum wage can drive a lot of firms out of the competitive market and put those people out of work. Then those people would rather stay on their wages than find themselves unemployed“, he said, according to Digi24.

Nicușor Dan believes that the decision must result from a dialogue between the Executive, employers and unions, so that a compromise can be found that protects both employees and the business environment.

Measures sent to Brussels

The statements come in the conditions where the Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, announced that the current coalition has already sent to Brussels a set of commitments regarding budgetary discipline. Among them is the freezing of some revenues for the year 2026, as part of the First Package of economic adjustments, which must be respected.
