President Nicușor Dan signed a decree Thursday by which Marius Lazurca receives the diplomatic rank of ambassador. Lazurca is the presidential advisor for national security and foreign policy and was one of the names circulated for the leadership of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE).
According to the Presidential Administration, Lazurca is one of the five diplomats who received the rank of ambassador, along with the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), Andrei Țărnea, Aniela Crețu, Dan Iancu and Mihaela-Simona Spinaru.
Marius Lazurca was appointed presidential advisor for national security last week. He also holds the position of adviser for foreign policy, which he has held since October 6.

Lazurca was one of the options circulated for the head of the Romanian Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE). On September 15, Nicușor Dan recalled Lazurca, who was ambassador to Mexico, to the country.
“Lazurca is a person I trust, I've known her for a long time. I think she can help more from a central position. We'll see what that will be,” President Nicușor Dan said on that occasion in an interview with CNN's Antena 3.
“I called him to take up a position in Bucharest. Further, on services, until we finish the discussion with the majority parties, I will say absolutely nothing,” Nicușor Dan said then.
Marius Lazurca was Romania's ambassador to Mexico between March 2021 and September 2025.
Before that, Lazurca was Permanent Representative of Romania to the Danube Commission (2016-2020), Ambassador of Romania to Hungary (2016-2020), the Republic of Moldova (2010-2016) and to the Holy See and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (2006-2010), according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
