Deputy George Simion, the leader of the AUR, criticized the president Nicușor Dan for the decision to participate in the event launching the candidacy of Cătălin Drula for the Capital City Hall.
The parliamentarian claims that the president's gesture was “totally unconstitutional” and “totally immoral”.
“Totally unconstitutional, totally outside the job description, totally immoral, inconceivable in other times, when such a gesture immediately caused the suspension. It is also inconceivable to cancel the elections in a democratic state, the cancellation on the grounds that the right person did not win the elections,” said George Simion, on Sunday, during the AUR Teleorman county conference.
The provisions of the Constitution in this regard
The Basic Law prohibits the sitting president from being part of a political party, but there is no provision for supporting or participating in political party congresses or gatherings.
“During the mandate, the President of Romania cannot be a member of a party and cannot perform any other public or private function”, according to the Constitution.
“The President of Romania represents the Romanian state and is the guarantor of the national independence, unity and territorial integrity of the country. The President of Romania ensures compliance with the Constitution and the proper functioning of public authorities. To this end, the President exercises the function of mediation between the powers of the state, as well as between the state and society”, according to the Constitution.
Nicușor Dan is not the first president to participate in a party event during his mandate. Klaus Iohannis took part in the PNL Congress from 2021, Traian Băsescu was at the PDL Congress from 2013, and Ion Iliescu was close to the PDSR/PSD.
Dan was also criticized by a PSD senator for taking part in the USR event on Sunday, where the president also gave a speech.
