The two doctors from the “Bagdasar-Arseni” Clinical Emergency Hospital in Bucharest, accused of manslaughter in a criminal case after they did not apply appropriate treatment to a patient with burns, who died, will be investigated at liberty. They were placed under judicial control for a period of 60 days.
Also, the on-call doctor, who recently retired, was denied the right to perform surgery. The attending physician was denied the right to practice at the Bagdasar hospital, the representatives of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Court announced on Thursday.
According to Agerpres, it is a 62-year-old woman (the doctor on duty), criminally investigated for manslaughter, and a 56-year-old man (the attending physician), accused of manslaughter, intellectual forgery and material forgery in official documents.
The two had been detained on Wednesday for 24 hours, but the prosecutors decided on Thursday not to request preventive arrest in court, but to apply only the measure of judicial control.
“During August 26 – 31, 2025, as a result of the transfer of a patient to the Functional Burn Unit – Anesthesia and Intensive Care of the 'Bagdasar-Arseni' Emergency Clinical Hospital, the suspect (a 62-year-old woman), as a doctor on duty, did not properly assess the extensive traumatic injuries on the body surface of the burned patient, failing to note that he had burns deep, located at the level of the posterior chest, on approximately 20% of the body surface. Later, the patient was taken over by the suspect, a 56-year-old man, who, in turn, did not perform his own evaluation of the patient's skin and, during the hospitalization, did not change the dressings daily, nor did he order them to be changed daily by other medical personnel. The omissions of the two suspects in the provision of medical care corresponding to the actual condition of the patient had the effect of not identifying and not treating chemically and surgically the deep burns located at the level of the posterior chest, which led to the rapid deterioration of the clinical condition and, finally, to the death of the patient, which occurred on August 31”, the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Court, sent in a press release.
The prosecutors claim that, aiming to create an appearance of conformity between the real clinical situation and the medical documents drawn up, as well as to comply with the standards imposed in the treatment of burned patients, the attending physician inserted false data into the content of two official documents.
Thus, he initialed and signed the hospital discharge sheet, unrealistically recording that the patient was dressed daily in the operating room, although he was aware that, during the entire period of hospitalization, the dressings were changed only in three days, the investigators say.
Later, the doctor altered the patient's general clinical observation sheet, holographing the percentage of 72% burns in the body surface over the previous, unrealistic percentage of 53%, to hide the omission of his own assessment of the patient during hospitalization, according to prosecutors.
The patient's death occurred on August 31, 2025.
Police officers from the Homicide Service and prosecutors from the Prosecutor's Office of the Bucharest Court conducted searches on Wednesday at the Emergency Clinical Hospital “Bagdasar-Arseni” in the capital.
