Folk calendar
Iverskaya
On this day, Orthodox people celebrate a holiday in honor of the Iveron Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, which is also called the Goalkeeper or Gatekeeper. The icon is revered as miraculous; its original, written, according to legend, by the Evangelist Luke, is kept in the Iveron Monastery on Mount Athos, in Greece.
There is a legend about the discovery of the icon. In the 9th century, one resident of Nicaea, wanting to save the face of the Mother of God from the iconoclasts, lowered the icon into the sea, where it was kept for two centuries. In the 11th century, the monks of the Iveron Monastery saw an image of the Mother of God supported by a pillar of fire in the middle of the water surface. The Monk Gabriel of Svyatogorets, at the direction of the Virgin Mary, walked across the water to the icon and transferred it to the monastery. However, in the morning the face was discovered above the gates of the monastery. This was repeated several times until, in the end, the icon was left in the place that it had chosen for itself. Since then, she began to be called the Gatekeeper or Goalkeeper.
This icon was highly revered in Rus'. They prayed to the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God for deliverance from various everyday troubles and for consolation in grief. Also in prayers they asked for protection from fire and to increase the fertility of the earth.
Russian people usually held baths on Iverskaya. The bathhouse was heated hotly, infusions of medicinal herbs were placed on the shelves, and patients with epilepsy were brought into the steam room. It was said that the healing herbal spirit could drive away illness.
