Toothpaste for acne: myth or emergency help – expert opinion

You can still find advice on the Internet that recommends applying toothpaste to a pimple at night to get rid of imperfections. This “good life hack” is passed down from generation to generation, especially among teenagers.

Opinions are divided, and some do not believe that toothpaste can relieve inflammation. And many cosmetologists even argue that this is just a myth that can result in irritation and burns.

People believe in the effectiveness of the method because toothpaste contains substances that seem to be “good” for fighting inflammation, since baking soda dries and neutralizes oil, hydrogen peroxide is antimicrobial, menthol is cooling and relieves redness, and triclosan kills bacteria.

And after applying the paste to a pimple, the paste can actually slightly dry out the skin, inflammation temporarily decreases, and it seems that the product is working.

But dermatological experts unanimously agree that toothpaste is not intended for the skin and can do more harm than good.

Disturbs skin pH

The paste has an alkaline pH level (8-10), while healthy skin is slightly acidic (4.5-5.5). Because of this, the natural protective barrier is destroyed.

Causes irritation

Sodium lauryl sulfate and fluorides are common ingredients in toothpastes that can cause redness, peeling, and even chemical burns.

Provokes a “reverse effect”

After severe drying, the skin begins to secrete even more sebum, which causes new inflammation.

May leave stains

Gel and whitening pastes often cause pigmentation after skin irritation.

When is it okay to use toothpaste?

  • Only in extreme emergency situations, when there is nothing else at hand. For example, a sudden pimple before an important event.
  • Choose a plain white toothpaste without fluoride, whitening particles or menthol.
  • Apply directly to inflammation only, without touching healthy skin.
  • Leave on for no more than 10-15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Never leave the paste on overnight.

Effective acne remedies

  • Salicylic acid (0.5–2%) – gently exfoliates, relieves inflammation.
  • Benzoyl peroxide (2.5–5%) – destroys bacteria and prevents new rashes.
  • Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic with a calming effect.
  • Adapalene (retinoid) – regulates cell renewal and reduces skin oiliness.
  • Proper daily care is also important: gentle cleansing, moisturizing with non-comedogenic cream, sun protection and a balanced diet.

Anti-acne toothpaste is not a care product, but a temporary and unsafe life hack. And although it can dry out inflammation, it will also damage the skin, disrupt its protection and cause new problems.

If you want to get rid of acne quickly and without consequences, use proven dermatological products or consult a specialist.
